Speakers at the 7 / 7 concert

During the concert on 7 July 2006, five speakers reflected on the terrible events one year before when the bombs killed and injured dozens in London and those terrible events shook the whole country.

Seamus Kelly OBE

Seamus Kelly OBE is St John Ambulance Commissioner London (Prince of Wales’s) District. He was St John Ambulance’s Gold Command on 7 July 2005 and was therefore directly responsible for co-ordinating the 37 ambulances and over 100 volunteers provided by the organisation for the emergency response.

Seamus joined St John Ambulance as a cadet in Colchester in 1963 and has since held a variety of posts. Since 1989 he has been Senior Officer in Command of major public events (eg. Notting Hill Carnival, New Year’s Eve, Millennium Eve, VE and VJ Commemorations, Princess Diana Funeral, Live 8 etc.). He has been on duty at all 26 London Marathons. Seamus was awarded an OBE in 2005 and made a Knight of Grace in the Order of St John in 2003.

 

Jeremy Penn

Born 1959 in the UK, Jeremy Penn was educated at Warwick School, at Corpus Christi College, Oxford (MA 1981) and (1999) the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School.

Jeremy joined Reuters (1981), and specialised in technology and marketing related to financial information. Over a period of 20 years he lived and worked in Zimbabwe, Morocco, Hong Kong, Australia, Singapore and the USA, as well as the UK. Jeremy was Managing Director of Reuters Asia and a member of Reuters Executive Committee and was appointed to succeed as Chief Executive of the Baltic Exchange in October 2003.

 

Dr Donald Dewar

Donald Dewar is a Specialist Registrar in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery with the London Deanery.

He studied medicine at Oxford University, and at Guy's & St Thomas' Hospitals medical school, graduating in 1997. His Plastic Surgery training has taken him to St George's Hospital, Tooting; Royal Free Hospital, Hampstead; and University College Hospital, London.

Donald is currently continuing his training at Mount Vernon Hospital, Northwood. His research interests are the epidemiology and treatment of hand injuries, and sentinel lymph node biopsy for malignant melanoma.

 

David Roodyn

David was educated at St Paul's School and Magdalene College, Cambridge and qualified as a solicitor in 1979. He is a visiting professor at Middlesex University. David specialises in defamation, but he has a wide practice encompassing sports law, wills and estates, employment and international work in France, Italy and South Africa.

David founded the British South African Law Association, the British Israel Law Association and the British Argentine Law Association. He was a Council Member of the International Committee of the Law Society between 1992 and 1999, Chairman of the International Awareness Group and his book on European Networking is now in its fifth edition. David speaks fluent French and Italian.

After surviving a grave illness in 2001, David became involved with charitable work and is a trustee of The Healing Foundation.

Rev Dr Brian Lee

Brian Lee is the Rector of St Botolph's, Aldgate and a Trustee of the Sir John Cass Foundation.

Active in community, charitable and educational work for many years, Brian has led a number of initiatives to tackle homelessness, including founding a direct access hostel and cold weather shelter for the homeless in Croydon. He is currently chair of the St Botolph's homelessness project in the City and a board member of Southwark and London Diocesan Housing Association. Brian is also an elected member of the City of London Corporation and Deputy for the Ward of Portsoken.

Brian was educated at St John's College York; King's College, London; and the College of Resurrection, Mirfield. Among many other commitments, Brian is the president of Sion College (a college of the clergy of the City), chaplain of the Worshipful Company of Tobacco Pipe Makers and Tobacco Blenders and a member of the City University development board.
